Roadmap to the Future

In selecting the most appropriate EMR for your organization, many factors need to be considered – cost, features, ease of use, integration capabilities, vendor responsiveness, and certification – the list can go on.

Technology may not always be part of that decision making process.  It should be.  The right technologies can have a substantial impact on the business and clinical value a new EMR will deliver to your organization.  The underlying technology used in an EMR can dramatically impact ROI, adoption, physician satisfaction, investment protection, implementation speed, and your ability to quickly support new business initiatives.

The Internet has revolutionized how both business and our personal lives are conducted.  It is also accelerating a change in the way healthcare is delivered.  It will especially transform how health information technology (HIT) is designed, implemented and deployed.  There are already many articles on how Web 2.0 is changing healthcare.

RelWare develops exclusively web-based applications and we always have.  EXR, RelWare’s Enterprise EMR/EHR, is entirely web-based and is built with native Internet and Web 2.0 technologies from the ground up. This means our solutions are on the early part of their life cycle and will continue to grow and mature with the Internet.

Many other vendor solutions are architected with old technologies (old hierarchical databases, proprietary operating systems & languages, client/server & thick client, requiring Citrix, etc).  What does this mean?  Here are several reasons to choose an EMR built on a platform that is poised to grow with your organization, not hold you back:

  • Web-based from end to end – Increase ROI in implementations
    • This makes it a low cost solution to securely deploy and support since expensive networking technologies like Citrix are not required and end user PCs require very little interaction to implement
  • Easy to use Web Graphical User Interface (GUI) – Accelerate use and adoption
    • Direct end-user personalization allows users to tailor the application exactly to how they work, their roles, and/or their locations
    • The ubiquitous nature of the Web paradigm makes training on EXR very fast
  • Strong integration and interoperability capabilities – Retain investment in existing systems
    • EXR possesses very robust native integration capabilities including standard HL7 transaction support and all major Internet and emerging interoperability standards
    • EXR will position an organization to easily exchange patient information as defined by future government standard
  • EXR uses the latest industry standard hardware, operating systems, programming languages and databases – This reduces overall support costs due to support resources for these industry standard technologies are readily available
    • Many major HIT vendors use proprietary and/or older versions of software languages, databases, hardware and operating systems – This increases support costs since resources to support proprietary technologies (MUMPS, Cache, NPR, etc) are hard to find and very costly to retain
  • EXR uses an open data model – Reporting becomes more cost effective
    • EXR users can extract data and/or generate reports without having to hire RelWare
    • Many other vendors have a closed data model which requires their client hire them to extract data and generate non-standard reports - This can be very costly for these clients
In selecting an EMR, the underlying technologies utilized can have a significant impact on the business value it will deliver to your organization.  Do not get stuck with old technology that will hold your organization back.  Contact RelWare and we can show you how EXR will help you grow
